If you're rebranding or moving your site to a different domain, WordPress needs to know its new address. Doing this in the wrong order can lock you out, so follow these steps.
1. Tell us and point the new domain
Contact support with the new domain before you change anything in WordPress, so we can connect it to your site. Then, at the company where the new domain is registered, create A records for @ and www pointing to your site's IP address (shown under Websites in your account). Wait until the new domain shows your site: DNS changes usually take a few hours and can take up to 72 hours. Your free SSL certificate is issued automatically once the domain points to us.
2. Change the address in WordPress
In your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings → General and change both WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) to the new domain, starting with https://. Click Save Changes. You'll be logged out and can log back in on the new address.
3. Update old links in your content
Your pages and settings may still contain links to the old domain. A search-and-replace plugin such as Better Search Replace can fix them:
- Install and activate it from Plugins → Add Plugin.
- Open Tools → Better Search Replace.
- Enter the old address in Search for and the new one in Replace with, select all tables, and run it as a dry run first to see what will change.
- Untick the dry run option and run it again.
If something goes wrong
If you're locked out or the old address still shows, contact support. We can clear the cache, help put the address back, or restore your site from a daily backup.
