Many WordPress tutorials tell you to edit files such as wp-config.php (WordPress's main configuration file, with your database details and security keys), .htaccess, php.ini or .user.ini, or to use FTP or phpMyAdmin.
On GUDHOST these files are managed for you, and there is no file or database access of your own. That keeps your site fast and secure, and almost everything those guides want to achieve can be done another way:
- Turn on debugging (WP_DEBUG) to find an error: contact support and we'll check your site's error logs for you. See "There has been a critical error on this website".
- Raise the memory or upload limit: contact support and we'll raise it.
- Change the PHP version: contact support. See "Your site's PHP version".
- Change the site address (WP_HOME, WP_SITEURL): use Settings → General. See "Change your site's domain in WordPress".
- Change the site language: Settings → General → Site Language.
- Control WordPress core updates (WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE): not needed. We keep the WordPress core up to date for you automatically, including security releases. You update your own plugins and themes.
- Add redirects: use a redirect plugin such as Redirection.
- Reset a password in the database: use Lost your password? or the Users page in WordPress. See "Reset a WordPress password".
If a plugin's instructions ask you to add lines to one of these files, contact support with the exact lines and what the plugin needs them for, and we'll look at it with you.
