Two server settings limit what a single WordPress action can do:
- Upload size limit: the largest file you can upload in one go, such as a video, a large image, or a theme or plugin ZIP file. WordPress shows your current limit on the media upload screen (Media → Add Media File) as "Maximum upload file size".
- Memory limit: how much memory a single page load or task may use. Page builders, online shops and import tools sometimes need more.
Signs you've hit a limit
- An upload fails with a message such as "The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive".
- WordPress shows "Allowed memory size of … bytes exhausted", or a critical error appears during a heavy task such as an import.
What to do
Contact support and tell us which limit you hit and what you were trying to do (for example "uploading a large video" or "importing 5,000 products"). We'll raise the limit for your site.
Before asking for more memory, check whether one plugin is to blame: deactivating plugins you don't need often fixes memory errors and makes your site faster too. Very large media such as long videos usually work better on a video service (for example YouTube or Vimeo), embedded in your page.
